PCGS 25c 1965 Washington Quarter Transitional on Silver Planchet XF40. PCGS 1965 Washington quarter transitional off-metal, struck on a silver quarter planchet.
The coin should have been struck on a clad planchet, but instead is on a pre-1965 silver quarter planchet. Transitional off-metal 1965 silver quarters are rare as well as popular. There are probably just a few dozen or so silver 1965 quarters known, and we have ever handled just a small number of them. Most are in XF-AU grades. The error occurred when silver quarter planchet intended for striking into a 1964 quarter was fed into a press striking 1965 quarters and was struck, resulting in this coin. PCGS XF40 with nice detail and luster for an XF. Also with light brown, mottled toning.
